Music Video: A Universal Voice.
This is the creative portion of my final project for my Blount Undergraduate Initiative (BUI) Worldviews class. It’s a music video collage set to the Polysics’ “I My Me Mine.” I chose this song in particular because a.) it is the music video that inspired my project and b.) the lyrics are mostly not in English. To illustrate my points, I mashed up the Polysics video with many popular music videos from America, Japan, Europe, and India.
The Basic Idea: While the language of the lyrics may vary from country to country, music videos remain readable across linguistic barriers through a system of characteristic tropes that range from those of burgeoning American Hollywood to the influences of Salvador Dali and fashion photography.
The thesis was a bit ambitious for a final class project, and (as a result) I’m not sure it really holds up under pressure. However, it was still a ton of fun to make!
